There are so many different type of light modifiers ad boxes out there in the market today. Each have their own pros and cons. It is also a very subjective matter as to what looks good and what does not.
A list of the general types of light modifiers out there:
We have a photo studio available for rent! Supporting freelance photographers, hobbyists and business owners in Singapore. Located near Macpherson MRT, you can book anytime 24/7 no restrictions whatsoever. Just bring your camera or a good phone – and start taking photos! With our professional equipment, lighting and backdrops, your pictures will look great Facebook album
Why pay to rent a photo studio space when you can snap good pics anywhere else, even at home? Sure, for small scale projects, hobbies, jobs that do not require any deadlines, go ahead and have fun experimenting the great outdoors!
Lighting & Environment
The main reason of using a studio will be the control of lighting. It is a controlled environment with professional equipment for use at your disposal.
Every aspect of production can be perfected to your liking. No worries about wind, rain, sunshine, clouds altering lighting from hard to soft, pesky insects and mosquitoes!
Shooting with studio lighting allows pretty much any camera to produce sharp, detailed, accurate colour images. Lighting will always be consistent 24/7.
We carry photographic equipment and gear that is usually not within the budgets of most people, or that there is no reason for you to purchase one due to your own space constraints. Feel free to explore and take your photos to the next level! Quality does not come cheap, you do not need to purchase equipment to achieve awesome photos! Even if you do have your own, there is no need to carry such heavy items around, sometimes from morning till late night.
Backdrop & Themes You may think shooting in a studio only produces boring and uninspiring images.
Not true! Have full control of your themes. No need to travel from location to location, hunting for the best spots, only for some random clouds to come rolling along, or rain to start the moment your backdrops have been done up. In a studio, you set your backdrops right there and then, tear down, and build the next one. Efficient! If you require multi-day bookings, you may even store your props in our studio overnight, at your own risk of course.
Completely fake an outdoor image by staging and shooting it in the studio. No reason to travel all over or even across borders to far-off and exotic locations just to get the look and feel you want.
Nobody likes feeling hot and humid. In a studio, not only will you be sheltered from the elements, but ours includes a wide variety of amenities and conveniences! No more searching for toilets, perspiring and struggling to change outdoors, doing your makeup and hair all sweaty and gross, getting bitten by mosquitoes, uncomfortable stares from curious passer-by’s, running out of batteries, feeling thirsty and hungry etc…
Our studio is fully air-conditioned, has a toilet, 2 proper changing rooms, power points, free WI-FI, water, and you can always order food up for your team for long late night shoots. (no food and drinks within actual studio, cosy up at our lounge area instead!)
Don’t you think for all these benefits, it is only reasonable that we charge a fee? A small one at that – only S$28/hr! (T&C’s apply). We offer you a space to unleash your creativity.
Furthermore, if you split the cost with your team, it can be far more affordable than you think.
Why do we charge way below market rate?
Our aim is not to earn, we open up our studios in order to give budding and inspiring photographers a chance to try our professional gear and take their passion to the next level! We always love to meet new people and make friends too 🙂 Perhaps even building a warm community along the way.
If you are a pro-photographer (think National Geographic) looking for extreme top industry grade shooting facilities for your RED DRAGON cameras and what-nots, our studio is not for you.
What we are is a cosy studio with all the minimum equipments you would expect a photo studio to have (the studio location is a fully operational photography business for graduation photo shoots during the day).
Feel free to arrange a viewing session prior to booking! Hope to see you soon!
In a nutshell – mostly excerpts taken from the article above: C-print is a form of printing traditionally done in a dark-room on photo paper. The photos are still chemically processed for both negatives and digital images alike. Less costly than inkjet pigment prints on fine art paper. Digital C-prints have a completely different look and feel because they are true continuous tone (con tone) prints, unlike inkjet prints which are halftone prints. Continuous tone simply means there is no break in the tone; this is due to the fact that the resulting colour dyes meld into one another. You can’t use C-print techniques for canvas.
Canvas is usually printed onto via dye-sublimation (computer heat transfer) or inkjet. Inkjet prints are produced by spraying thousands of very fine, minute (picoliter) droplets of ink varying in size and spacing on paper, giving the illusion of continuous tone.
“That said, there are those that simply prefer the look and feel of chromogenic prints – the aesthetics so to speak.
They like the way light reflects off a C-print and the glossiness and saturation of dye inks. But because inkjet pigment inks are placed on top of, rather than within the paper (like dyes in C-prints), pigment prints can appear more vibrant under certain lighting conditions in the eyes of some.”
For our canvas printing, we are using inkjet (giclee) in order to produce prints that are fit for sales in photo studios. There are high and low quality available as well. Ours is mid-high quality. Not the extreme best as we want to keep it affordable for the masses, but trust us when we say that the quality is truly superb for the price you are paying. By extreme best, we are referring to premium markets whereby artists can easily fetch tens of thousands for their canvas print works.
It’s not just about snapping a picture, a few clicks here and there on photoshop, pressing a button to print and voila! If only it was that easy.
That’s when we come in with our expertise, our knowledge and years of dedicated experience. That’s the true value of paying for service and quality.
To quote Mr. Nick Carver’s words from 8:24 onwards: “Now i mean it when i say it, that this is what photography is really about. It’s about getting prints made, getting them framed, hanging them on a wall; that’s where you’re gonna get your real satisfaction of photography. Taking a picture and then just uploading the file in Instagram, hoping people are gonna like it, before they flip on to the next picture in under half a second? That kind of satisfaction? That’s nothing compared to the satisfaction you get from having a print made and hanging on the wall. So get out there, get some high quality prints made, frame them up, and feel good about it because this is what photography is all about: Getting the print hanging on the wall.”
P.S. C-type is not superior to Inkjet printing (what we offer). C-type is a form of wet printing or “traditional dark-room” print. Each has their own merits.
Every printing house is different! It’s not good enough to just go around comparing prices.
Every material chosen, inks used, software, skill in colour matching will be different, thus a different result achieved. It all comes down to experience to know what really works and what doesn’t.
Many printers insist on using only files that at at least 2MB big or 300dpi (resolution) and above. Honestly, who goes around with a professional DSLR daily to capture candid moments? We can print a decent picture taken using a good handphone even at just 72dpi.
(Handphone picture at 72 DPI, printed onto 11×14″ canvas)
Why are we able to do it, and confidently at that? This is because our inkjet machines are able to spray ink at a higher density and resolution/finer ink, and able to cover much smaller spaces of dots per inch. Most standard printing shops will not carry such machines as it is very expensive and more costly to operate. Therefore, we have a much higher chance of printing a decent quality handphone picture.
There are many things that affect output quality:
1. the conversion process
2. the printing software quality
3. physical attributes of the printer (printing heads, ink quality etc…)
4. quality of paper
This is really an instance whereby CHEAP ≠ A GOOD DEAL
How are we able to keep prices so low? We do not have a retail shop space (there is no need for that), keeping overhead costs low. We also do not offer free edit and colour corrections to pictures any further as well. We just print whatever you send us so please make sure it is your confirmed design. From time-to-time, we may encounter an image that will turn up too orange or dark once printed and we will still gladly correct it for you, solely at our own discretion.

Interesting read: The Canvas Works
“The bad ones – and there are many – will just go ahead and print your file and then blame you afterwards for supplying a poor quality print file.
I took the decision long ago that at The Canvas Works, we would not go down that road. It’s just lazy. We’d rather refund an order than print a poor quality image.”
Exactly what we do here at Studio Canvassa as well. We will never allow customers to receive horribly printed pictures. We understand not everyone has a DSLR or professional snapping pics for them. We will explicitly make clear on expectations & quality of prints before proceeding. After-all, your picture is a beautiful memory to be showcased. We don’t want you to be constantly reminded of our bad service as well.
This is why we have a high customer return rate. We offer very personalized service, superb quality, and honest opinions. We take pride in what we do. It’s not just trying to make a sale, we are all about building long-term relationships.
